This project is designed to encourage students to explore their world and express their feelings about it; helping to develop critical thinking and abstract analysis, which are key skills students need their whole lives. By giving them an outlet for their creative energy, one that has a focus on developing these key skills, we are helping them to succeed in all areas of their life. It is easy to ignore what students have to say; but when so much depends on them, how can we, any longer? The benefit to students will be the development of new skills, and new attitudes about the value of learning. When students start showing a passion for learning, teachers will respond, and parents. This project will show to the country these passionate students - students, parents, and educators will read the eZine and book and they will want to spread that passion for learning to their own schools with strength of knowing it is possible.
There are 1,500 pupils at Northview; and there are 1,816,233 in California high schools. We want this project to reach as many of them as it can; even if their school is not able to participate, we hope they will be inspired by those that do. With this project culminating with a nationwide book project, composed of works from students in every state, there is virtually no limit to how many people Express can reach.
Express is operated out of Northview High School in Covina, California. All content in the book and eZine is written or created by students. This project was founded by Kyle Lowry, a former student of Northview. He is currently attending college and majoring in Computer Information Technology. |
